BNP is on track to form a government on its own after winning an absolute majority in the 13th parliamentary election. Party and parliamentary sources say the swearing-in of the prime minister and cabinet could take place very soon—the most likely date being next Monday.
The new cabinet, while limited in size, will be balanced in composition. There are plans to include young faces and in some cases technocrats alongside veteran and tested leaders. The potential size of the cabinet could be between 32 and 42 members.
Party sources said that BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir may get important ministerial responsibilities. Besides, the names of some senior leaders and principled organizers in the party who are in policy-making roles are being discussed. The technocrat quota may also be used to represent the younger generation and include experts.
There are also plans to include a limited number of representatives from allied political forces in the cabinet—so as to send a message of cooperative politics to parliament.
Overall, there is strong expectation in the political arena that the new BNP cabinet will be formed with a combination of experience, expertise, and generational change.
