
The unofficial results of 296 out of 299 seats in the 13th National Parliament election have been declared so far. The results available till 9:30 am on Friday showed the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its alliance winning 213 seats, ensuring a clear majority to form the government. Party sources said that BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman will lead the new government.
According to the results announced by the returning officers, the 11-party alliance led by ** Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami ** won 74 seats. Other parties and independent candidates won 9 seats.
BNP said it has decided not to hold a victory procession. Instead, thanksgiving and special prayers will be organized across the country after Friday prayers today.
Voting began at 7:30 am in 42,779 polling stations and ended at 4:30 pm. As the voting in Sherpur-3 constituency was postponed, 2,029 candidates contested in a total of 299 constituencies. The number of voters this time was more than 127.7 million; among them, women voters make up almost an equal share.
