BNP returns to government after two decades, wins two-thirds of seats

  • The BNP has moved towards forming a government by a landslide in the 13th National Parliament elections. With unofficial results confirming victory in more than two-thirds of the seats, the party is returning to power after nearly two decades.

    According to the latest estimates from the field, BNP and its alliance candidates have won 207 seats in the 299-seat elections so far. Jamaat-e-Islami and allied parties have won 73 seats. Islami Andolan Bangladesh has won one seat; independents and others have won seven seats. BNP candidates are also ahead in some of the remaining seats.

    BNP has already announced that party chairman Tarique Rahman will be the country’s next prime minister with these results . He was elected from two constituencies – Dhaka-17 and Bogra-6.

    Voting was held in 299 of the 300 constituencies on Thursday. Voting was suspended in Sherpur-3 due to the death of a candidate. By 1:45 pm on Friday, unofficial results for 288 constituencies were available.

    Mahdi Amin, spokesperson for the BNP’s election management committee and advisor to the chairman, told a news briefing that the party is going to win more than two-thirds of the seats with the support of the people. According to him, the votes received and seat-based data give BNP ‘full confidence’ in its victory.
