At least nine people have been killed in lightning strikes in four districts of the country. The deaths were reported in separate incidents in Netrokona, Sunamganj, Habiganj and Noakhali from Monday morning to noon. Several others were injured.
The highest number of deaths occurred in Netrakona and Sunamganj, where three people were killed.
Two farmers were killed in a lightning strike while fishing in the Dhanu River in Khaliajuri, Netrokona. According to the local administration, the body has been handed over to the relatives after the incident.
Three farmers were killed while harvesting paddy in Haor in Sunamganj. Three others were injured in the same incident. Hospital sources said some of the injured were being treated.
Two people, including a farmer, were killed in separate incidents in Habiganj. They were killed in lightning strikes while bringing paddy to the fields in Nabiganj and Baniachang upazilas.
On the other hand, a young man was killed in a lightning strike while trying to pick up nuts in Hatia of Noakhali.
In recent times, there has been an increase in lightning-related accidents during agricultural work in haors and open fields. Experts have advised not to stay during thunderstorms in open fields, water bodies and high places.
The administration said necessary steps are also being taken to help the affected families.
