The Ministry of External Affairs has officially announced the appointment of Dinesh Trivedi as the new High Commissioner to Bangladesh. He will be replaced by outgoing High Commissioner Pranay Verma.
According to a statement published on the website of India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Monday, Dinesh Trivedi will take over in Dhaka soon.
This appointment is seen as significant, as an active politician has been sent to Bangladesh as an Indian high commissioner. According to the diplomatic circles, it can convey a message of strengthening political engagement in bilateral relations.
The current High Commissioner, Pranay Verma, has already been appointed as India’s ambassador to the European Union and Belgium.
The 75-year-old Dinesh Trivedi is a well-known face in Indian national politics. He served as a former Union Railway Minister and was a member of Manmohan Singh’s cabinet. He also served as the Minister of Health and Family Welfare.
He left the party in 2021 and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
According to political analysts, the decision to send an experienced politician to Dhaka could indicate a new strategic dimension to Bangladesh-India relations, especially in the context of trade, border cooperation and regional geopolitics.
