Bogra, a major city in the north, has been declared the new city corporation of the country. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman made the announcement on Monday afternoon, which is considered a significant addition to the structure of the country’s urban administration.
At the inaugural ceremony, he inaugurated the activities through unveiling of the plaque of the city corporation and planting symbolic trees. Calling upon the city dwellers to maintain cleanliness, he said the administration and citizens need coordinated efforts to ensure better urban management.
As part of the official visit, the prime minister also inaugurated the e-bail bond programme to expand digital services in the judicial system. He is also scheduled to inaugurate various development projects, social security activities and public gatherings during the day-long programme.
Bogra, known as the gateway to North Bengal, has long played an important role as the focus of trade, agriculture and communication. However, there were complaints from the local people about the limitations of the city service. The announcement of the city corporation will now create opportunities for large-scale infrastructure development, modernization of road and drainage systems, waste management and digital civil services.
According to historians, this municipality, which was established in the 19th century, has gradually expanded and now become a major urban structure. They see the opportunity to get the status of the city corporation as a timely decision.
Local businessmen and civil society representatives say the decision will increase the potential for new investment, industrialization and employment. At the same time, they also highlighted the need to take effective plans to solve long-standing problems like traffic congestion, waterlogging and unplanned urbanization.
According to analysts, the initiative, which combines administrative development and political message, could not only be a structural change, but also an important milestone in the overall urbanization of the northern region.
