Japan’s Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning across the country after a powerful earthquake struck off Japan’s north coast on Monday. Initially, the magnitude of the earthquake was called 7.9, but it was later corrected and confirmed as 7.4.
The quake occurred in the sea area near the Sanriku coast at 4pm local time. The tremor, which was about 10km from the surface of the earth, was so severe that it was also felt in Tokyo, the capital, a few hundred kilometers away.
Japanese broadcaster NHK reported that a tsunami of up to 3m was expected to hit the coast of the sea coast in the post-quake period. In this situation, the wide coastal areas of Hokaido and Ywate have been declared high-risk.
After the earthquake, authorities concerned began closely monitoring whether there had been any abnormalities at the Onagawa nuclear power plant. So far, no major damage or loss of life has been reported.
Japan’s disaster management agency said it was a top priority to ensure possible tsunamis and coastal safety rather than damage in the current situation.
