  • Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will inaugurate a pilot project for the distribution of family cards aimed at directly supporting poor and low-income families . The program will start simultaneously in 14 upazilas of the country on March 10.

After a meeting in the capital on Tuesday, Social Welfare Minister Professor Dr. Abu Zafar Md. Zahid Hossain said that the final decision to implement the project on a trial basis has been taken based on the recommendations of the cabinet sub-committee. The cards will be distributed universally in one ward of one union in each upazila.

The minister said that through this card, female members of extremely poor, poor and low-income families will receive financial assistance of Tk 2,500 per month . Information will be collected through a ‘door-to-door’ method without any political or religious considerations, so that the real beneficiaries are included.

If the four-month pilot phase is successful, there are plans to expand the program across the country in phases. According to the government, the initiative focuses on women’s economic empowerment, which will ensure stability for a family as well as future generations.
