A powerful earthquake has struck off the coast of Sabah state on the Malaysian island of Borneo. It measured 7.1 on the Richter scale. The tremors were felt at 12:57 a.m. local time on Monday (February 23).
The United States Geological Survey said the quake was centeredabout 100 kilometers northeast of Sabah’s capital , Kota Kinabalu . It was about 620 kilometers deep, so there was little risk of major damage or loss of life. No tsunami warning was issued.
The Malaysia Meteorological Department, on the other hand , recorded the earthquake at a magnitude of 6.8. The agency said mild to moderate tremors were felt along the west coast of Sabah as well as in some areas of Sarawak.
