The government has appointed Aminul Islam as the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal . The decision was announced in a notification issued by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs on Monday (February 23). The notification was signed by Solicitor Md. Manjurul Hossain .
The notification said that Aminul Islam will serve as the Chief Prosecutor until further orders. At the same time, the appointment of former Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam has been canceled. On September 5, 2024, the interim government gave him this responsibility with the rank of Attorney General.
Tajul Islam served for one and a half years at the reconstituted International Crimes Tribunal . During his tenure, 24 formal charges were filed for crimes against humanity committed in July-August 2024. The trials of these cases are currently ongoing in Tribunals 1 and 2; three of them have been judged.
Those convicted in the announced verdicts include ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal . In addition, verdicts in two cases, including the murder of Abu Sayeed, the first martyr of the July uprising , are pending. The verdict in a crime against humanity case in Rampura is scheduled for March 4.
