Government employees held a rally at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital on Friday morning demanding the publication and implementation of the 9th pay scale gazette as recommended by the 9th National Pay Commission.
The rally, which started at 9 am, was attended by employees of various government and semi-government departments, including the Bangladesh Government Employees Welfare Association. Organizers said that due to the lack of visible progress from the government, a nationwide strike was observed simultaneously and a protest march program was announced after the rally.
Wares Ali, chief coordinator of the Government Employees’ Demands and Demands Unity Council, said that the employees have been carrying out a peaceful protest within the disciplinary code. According to him, the protest has been intensified as the gazette was expected to be published by January 31 but it has not been implemented.
The protesters said that if their demands are not met, more stringent measures may be taken in the future.
