US President Donald Trump has claimed that the acquisition of Greenland is essential for the United States in the interests of national security and that Denmark is not capable of defending the island territory.
He told reporters in Florida that the issue of buying Greenland would be discussed at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week.
Trump said Greenland was strategically important and its role in detecting missile attacks was “very significant.” He reiterated his offer to buy the island from Denmark and did not rule out the possibility of using military force if opposition continued.
Meanwhile, Trump has announced a 10 percent tariff on goods from eight European NATO allies, including the UK, starting in February, which could rise to 25 percent in June, for opposing the acquisition of Greenland. Although European leaders have called the threat “blackmail,” Trump has said he will implement the decision to impose tariffs 100 percent.
