US President Donald Trump is adamant about his demand to annex Greenland, and has threatened to impose tariffs on European countries if they oppose the move.
Following Trump’s statement, European allies have sent a message of unity to protect Greenland’s sovereignty.
Denmark and the UK have made it clear that the right to determine Greenland’s future lies with the people of Denmark and Greenland. Trump, without ruling out the possibility of using military force, announced tariffs on goods from eight NATO members, including the UK, which are set to take effect in February.
Denmark has warned that US intervention in Greenland could put the future of NATO in question. The European Union is calling an emergency meeting to respond to Trump’s threat. EU leaders say there will be no conflict, but there will be no compromise on the issue of sovereignty.
