The press wing of the interim government and its chief advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus has claimed that the public stance of the government in favor of a ‘yes’ vote in the upcoming referendum on the implementation of the July National Charter 2025 is not against democratic ideals.
In a statement on Sunday, the press wing said that taking a stand for reforms on behalf of the interim government formed with a reform mandate is not a violation of impartiality, but a natural manifestation of responsible leadership. It also noted that the government is responsible for preparing the framework for state reforms in addition to day-to-day administration.
The statement said that in international democratic practice, it is not unusual for heads of government to publicly express their opinions in important referendums. The final decision in a referendum will be in the hands of the people and the role of the administration will be limited to helping voters make informed decisions.
The Press Wing further stated that the interim government has no electoral interests involved in the outcome of this referendum; the responsibility for implementing reforms will lie with the future elected government.
