After nearly 22 years, foreign forces led by the United States have completely abandoned Iraq’s Ain al-Asad air base. The Iraqi army has taken full control of the base after the last troops left, the country’s Defense Ministry said on Saturday.
The base, established during the Iraq War in 2003, was home to US troops as well as troops from other coalition countries. The move was part of a troop withdrawal agreement between Iraq and the United States in 2024.
It is worth noting that Iran launched a missile attack on this base in retaliation for the killing of Qassem Soleimani in 2020, damaging it. According to the agreement, the remaining troops will also leave Iraq by September 2025.
