Two student representatives—Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan and Mahfuz Alam—have resigned from the interim government’s advisory council. They submitted their resignations after a meeting with chief advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday evening, government sources said.
The possibility of their resignations had become strong in the run-up to the announcement of the schedule, as both were planning to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections. The speculation has been further fueled by news that the Election Commission is preparing to announce the schedule for the 13th parliamentary elections today or Thursday.
In a press conference at the secretariat in the afternoon, Asif Mahmud, advisor to the Ministry of Local Government, confirmed his candidacy in the election. However, he did not say which party he would accept the nomination from. Regarding the resignation, he said that the decision will be announced from the office of the chief advisor.
With their departure, the interim government’s advisory council faces a visible reshuffle ahead of the election deadline. The government and administration are now fully focused on completing preparations for the upcoming elections.
