Mufti Mamunur Rashid Kasemi, founder of the “Ideal Marriage Bureau,” was arrested Sunday afternoon from his residence in Atibazar, Dhaka. Police confirmed that he was detained in a case filed at Keraniganj Police Station on charges of abusing and exploiting women. He is currently in police custody.
The allegations surfaced last month when a woman, identifying herself as Kasemi’s alleged third wife, published a detailed statement on social media. She claimed that the “Ideal Marriage Bureau,” which initially promised safe and reliable matchmaking services for women, was in reality running a network that trapped them into short-term marital contracts, exploited them, and later abandoned them.
She further alleged that she had been subjected to verbal marriage arrangements, forced abortion, threats, and other forms of personal abuse. According to her, despite these actions, Kasemi went on to marry a 13-year-old girl in Kushtia—an incident that has reportedly been kept hidden.
The woman also stated that following her accusations, Kasemi’s family members issued threats against her. She filed a case at the police station on October 14.
Police say the case is under investigation, and all allegations will be thoroughly examined.
