The government has deployed Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Dhaka and its surrounding districts to strengthen security amid rising unrest linked to the banned Awami League’s “lockdown” program.
The deployment comes after three consecutive days of scattered bomb blasts and arson attacks on vehicles across various parts of the country.
On Wednesday morning, BGB’s public relations officer Shariful Islam confirmed the deployment through an official statement. The message said, “BGB has been deployed to maintain overall law and order and ensure security in Dhaka and its surrounding districts.”
However, the statement did not specify how many platoons have been deployed.
Notably, tensions have escalated ahead of the upcoming verdict by the International Crimes Tribunal in the war crimes case against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. In this context, the banned Awami League has announced district-level protests from November 10 to 13 and a “lockdown” on November 13.
Meanwhile, sporadic bomb attacks and vehicle fires have been reported in different areas, including Dhaka. In one such incident in Mymensingh, a transport worker was killed after a bus was set on fire.
