A Baul singer from Lalon Academy, identified as Ratan (42), was stabbed by miscreants in Mill Line area of Kushtia Sadar upazila on Friday night (October 24).
Ratan, son of the late Afsar Ali from Paikpara village under Chapra Union in Kumarkhali upazila, is also the vice-president of the cultural organization ‘Shilpi Samaj’ in Kushtia and a regular performer at the Lalon Academy.
According to police and family sources, after performing at an event near the Lalon shrine in Cheuria, Ratan was returning home on his motorcycle when unidentified assailants attacked and stabbed him in the back before fleeing. Locals rescued him and took him to the hospital in critical condition.
Dr. Hossain Imam, the resident medical officer at Kushtia General Hospital, said, “Ratan was admitted around 2 a.m. with stab wounds to his back from a sharp weapon. However, his condition is now stable.”
Several cultural organizations have condemned the attack. Abdur Razzak Bachchu, president of Bhober Hat Sangeet Academy and a former executive member of the Lalon Academy, said, “Ratan is a regular singer at the academy. This attack is an assault on our cultural sphere. We demand the immediate arrest of the perpetrators.”
Kushtia Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mosharaf Hossain said police were dispatched to the scene that night and that both Kumarkhali and Model police stations are jointly investigating the incident.
