A ‘July Memorial’ is set to be constructed at Osmani Udyan in Dhaka to honor the martyrs of the July People’s Uprising. On Sunday (October 12), the foundation stone of the memorial was laid by Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiya, Adviser of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives.
Funded by the Local Government Division with Tk 464 million, the project is being implemented by the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). The memorial will be built on a circular platform, featuring eight rectangular columns on either side and a central cylindrical column standing 90 feet tall. There will be two entryways with epitaphs, and the surrounding area will be planted with large Krishnochura (Delonix regia) trees.
During the inauguration, Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiya stated, “The design and construction of the memorial reflect the history and sacrifice of the martyrs of the July Uprising with the highest respect.” He also noted that questions about the budget are politically motivated rather than a concern for public money.
DSCC Administrator Md. Shahjahan Mia said that the piling work of the memorial is in its final stage, and construction is expected to be completed by December this year. Senior officials from the Local Government Division, including Secretary Md. Rezaul Maksud Zahedi, were present at the ceremony.
The memorial aims to preserve and transmit the memory of the martyrs and injured participants of the July Uprising for future generations.
