Election Commissioner (EC) Tahmida Ahmed has stated that according to the voter list, the current population of Bangladesh is 190 million. Of this, 15.1 million people reside in the capital, Dhaka.
She shared this information on Sunday (28 September) during a dialogue with civil society ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Elections at Agargaon.
EC Tahmida said that the population figures published by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) are questionable, and there were later instructions to reduce the numbers. According to her, the Election Commission’s data is entirely accurate. Excluding expatriates, the population based on the voter list is 190 million.
To ensure free, fair, and impartial elections, she expressed support for holding voting in open spaces. The EC emphasized that to conduct transparent elections, a mindset of open-space voting must be developed. For reference, according to BBS data in November 2023, the total population of the country was 169.8 million, with 84.1 million men and 85.6 million women.
