In Khagrachhari district, following the alleged rape of a Marma schoolgirl, the district administration has imposed Section 144 indefinitely amid protests and rising tension.
District Commissioner A B M Iftikharul Islam Khandakar confirmed the move in a press release on Saturday afternoon. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday night, has sparked ongoing demonstrations and unrest in the hill district.
With the assistance of police and the army, a young man named Shayon Sheel (19) was arrested on Wednesday. In protest, the ‘Jummo Chhatra-Janata’ staged a half-day road blockade in the district on Thursday.
The press release stated that due to the deteriorating law and order situation and the risk of harm to life and property in Khagrachhari municipality and Sadar Upazila, Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, 1898 has been enforced.
The order is effective from 2 PM onwards and will remain in force until further notice. Legal action will be taken against anyone violating the order.
