U.S. President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on the United Nations, accusing the body of failing to establish peace and instead encouraging illegal immigration. This was his first address to the UN General Assembly since returning to the White House.
In his Tuesday speech, Trump alleged that the UN was fueling an “invasion” of Western nations through immigration, describing those countries as “going to hell.” He also ridiculed global efforts to combat climate change, calling it “the greatest hoax in world history.”
Trump questioned the very purpose of the UN, saying all it does is “write strongly worded letters,” which he dismissed as “empty words—and empty words don’t stop wars.” He even mocked the UN headquarters in New York for its broken escalators and faulty teleprompters.
The former president claimed he had tried to end seven wars during his tenure but admitted his efforts failed in the face of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the Hamas–Israel conflict after the October 7, 2023 attack. He condemned countries recognizing Palestine as effectively “rewarding Hamas for atrocities.”
Trump also lashed out at European allies, as well as China and India, for continuing to buy oil from Russia, though he remained relatively restrained in his remarks about Moscow, warning only that Washington was prepared to impose indefinite sanctions.
His harshest words came on immigration, accusing the UN of “funding an assault on Western nations.” He declared, “It’s time to end the failed experiment of open borders. Your countries are going to hell.” During his tirade, Trump also took aim at London’s first Muslim mayor, Sadiq Khan, in a personal attack.
