The submission of the investigation report in the much-discussed Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi murder case has now been postponed 121 times. The court has fixed November 30 as the new date for filing the report.
On Sunday (September 14), the investigation report was scheduled to be submitted, but PBI Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Azizul Haque failed to do so. Expressing dissatisfaction over the slow progress, the court directed the investigating officers to make every possible effort to move the case forward.
During the hearing, the investigating officer informed the court that the probe is being carried out by a special task force under the High Court’s directive. He claimed that interrogations of journalists, neighbors, relatives, and DNA experts yielded significant information, including mixed DNA samples of two individuals. However, their identities could not be confirmed, which has delayed the submission of the final report.
On the night of February 11, 2012, the journalist couple was brutally murdered in their rented apartment at West Rajabazar, Dhaka. Their mutilated bodies were recovered the following morning. Later, Runi’s brother filed a murder case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Initially, the case was investigated by the local police, followed by the DB (Detective Branch) and later RAB, but none could solve the mystery. Last year, under the directive of the High Court, a high-powered task force was formed to investigate further.
There are eight accused in the case, including Runi’s friend Tanvir Rahman. Although they were taken into remand multiple times, none provided a confessional statement. More than 13 years later, the investigation into this sensational murder case remains unresolved.
