Five years after the death of legendary Bangladeshi playback singer Andrew Kishore, a tax notice has been issued in his name by Tax Zone–12. The letter claims that he owes 72,803 taka in unpaid taxes. Kishore passed away on July 6, 2020.
According to the notice signed by Assistant Tax Commissioner Kazi Rehman Sajid, the outstanding dues include 22,423 taka for the fiscal year 2005–06 and 50,380 taka for 2012–13.
When asked about the matter, Kazi Rehman Sajid said, “This is part of our routine procedure. The unpaid taxes of a deceased taxpayer are transferred to their legal heirs.”
Under Bangladeshi law, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) can recover taxes from the estate of a deceased person. One heir must be appointed as the representative taxpayer, who will file annual returns and pay the taxes on behalf of the deceased. Taxes are applicable only if there is taxable income generated from the deceased’s estate or business.
Until the deceased’s assets are formally divided among heirs, the nominated representative must continue paying the taxes. Failure to comply with these obligations can lead to legal action against the designated heir.
