Following repeated clashes between students and locals near Chittagong University’s Gate No. 2, the Hathazari Upazila administration has imposed Section 144 in the area from Sunday afternoon. The order will remain in effect until 12:00 am Monday night.
Under Section 144, all types of rallies, gatherings, processions, and public assemblies in and around the university are prohibited. No more than five people are allowed to assemble or move together, while carrying firearms, homemade weapons, or explosives has also been strictly banned.
At least 55 people, mostly students, were injured in the clashes and admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Doctors said all of them are out of danger.
The violence broke out late Saturday night after an altercation and scuffle between a female student and a security guard at a rented building. Later, students and locals confronted each other, throwing stones and using sharp weapons.
Among the injured were the university’s proctor, several assistant proctors, other officials, and even Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Kamal Uddin. The situation came under partial control around 3:30 am when army personnel arrived at the scene.
