Former Inspector General of Bangladesh Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has been released on bail from a Dubai prison in the United Arab Emirates – although some media outlets in the country have reported this, the Bangladesh Police still does not have any official information on the matter, the Police Headquarters said.
Concerned officials at the police headquarters said they are verifying whether Benazir Ahmed has been released on bail or not. They declined to make any official comment on the matter right now.
Media reports said that Benazir Ahmed was released from prison after a Dubai court granted her bail application and completed the necessary legal procedures. However, there has been no official announcement from the UAE authorities in this regard yet.
According to the report, as a condition of bail, Benazir Ahmed’s passport has been kept in the custody of the court and she cannot leave the UAE without the court’s prior permission. These conditions will remain in place during the judicial proceedings of the case.
Earlier, on June 12, Dubai authorities informed Bangladesh that Benazir Ahmed had been arrested with the cooperation of Dubai Police and Interpol.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed multiple cases against Benazir Ahmed on charges of illegal wealth acquisition and money laundering. There is also a court arrest warrant against her in connection with these cases.
Benazir Ahmed served as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) from April 15, 2020 to September 30, 2022. Prior to that, she was the Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). In 2021, when the United States imposed sanctions on several current and former RAB officials for alleged human rights violations, Benazir Ahmed’s name was also included in the list.
