  • The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the bail of retired army member Hafizur Rahman in the murder case of college student and playwright Sohagi Jahan Tonu. He was also ordered to surrender within twenty-four hours.

On Thursday (August 6th), the Appellate Division Justice Md. Rezaul Haque’s chamber judge stayed the High Court order.

Earlier, on August 2nd, the High Court granted bail to Hafizur Rahman. He was released on August 4th. The state appealed against the bail.

At the end of the hearing, Attorney General Barrister Md. Ruhul Quddus Kajol said Hafizur Rahman should surrender within 24 hours as per the court order. The law enforcement agencies have been ordered to arrest him if he does not surrender within the stipulated time.

The next legal proceedings of the case will now depend on the decision of the Appellate Division as the High Court’s bail order is harassed for the time being.
