
Measles infections are increasing at an alarming rate across the country. In the last 24 hours, 16 more children have died from measles and its symptoms. At the same time, 1,434 children have been newly infected.
This information was provided in the latest report published by the Directorate General of Health Services on Sunday.
According to the Department of Health, a total of 528 children died from measles and its symptoms across the country from March 15 to 8 am on May 24 this year. Of these, 86 children died from measles confirmed by testing. In addition, another 442 children died with measles symptoms.
At the same time, 8,622 children have been confirmed to be infected with measles. And 63,813 children have been admitted to various hospitals in the country with symptoms.
According to statistics, Dhaka Division is at the highest risk in terms of cases and deaths. So far, 224 children have died of measles and symptoms in the division and 36,176 children have been infected.
Health experts say the situation is becoming worrisome due to deficiencies in the child vaccination program, lack of public awareness, and the rapid spread of the infection. They have emphasized ensuring timely vaccination of children, prompt treatment of those infected, and adherence to hygiene rules.
The Department of Health has also announced that it will strengthen nationwide surveillance and treatment activities to control the infection.
