Tarique Rahman has inaugurated the re-excavation of the canal in Trishal. He officially launched the programme on Saturday afternoon. Local people also took part in the activities through volunteering.
The government said the main objective of the initiative is to revive agriculture, irrigation and environment through the restoration of long-disputed canals and waterways. The government sees the canal re-excavation programme as an important step in increasing agricultural production as well as reducing waterlogging and mobilizing the rural economy.
Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that if the canals of the marginalized areas of the country are restored, new opportunities will be created in agriculture and there will be positive changes in the irrigation system. He urged the local people to participate in protecting the environment and water resources.
Earlier in the morning, the prime minister left for Mymensingh from the capital. As part of the visit, he also took part in the inauguration of the programme on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
A three-day cultural programme has been organized to mark the 127th birth anniversary of the poet at the national level in Trishal. Artists and cultural activists from different parts of the country are taking part in Nazrul music, poetry recitation, discussion meetings and cultural performances.
Special security measures have been taken in the entire area. In addition to the administration, members of the law enforcement agencies have also stepped up surveillance in important places.
According to the concerned, both the canal re-excavation programme and cultural initiative have created a new enthusiasm in the local public life. Local residents are looking positively at the efforts to restore reservoirs, especially in the agricultural-dependent region.
