China strongly opposes the draft resolution by the United States and Bahrain on the Strait of Hormuz in the UN Security Council. Beijing said that in the current situation, such a proposal could exacerate tensions rather than resolve the crisis.
China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Chong, said both the content and time elections were “completely inappropriate”. He said it was more important to bring the parties concerned back to the negotiating table instead of unilateral condemnation or pressure at this time.
The joint resolution calls on Iran to stop military activity and mine installations in the Strait of Hormuz. However, diplomatic sources believe that if the resolution goes to vote, China and Russia can jointly veto.
According to analysts, the Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important energy transport routes in the world, military tensions can have a major impact on the international trade and oil market. The United States recognizes the safety of the waterways as important to the global economy. On the other hand, China and Russia believe that the West is trying to unilaterally impair the responsibility against Iran.
Chinese Ambassador Fu Chong said, “In the current situation, if a motion is passed by the Security Council, it could further complicate the situation instead of resolving the crisis.” According to him, a permanent solution to the crisis can be achieved through diplomatic dialogue and mutual understanding.
A similar U.S.-backed proposal has not been passed by China and Russia. The two countries still complained that the language of the proposal was one-sided and did not properly reflect the real situation in the Middle East.
According to international analysts, the dispute, centering on the Strait of Hormuz, highlights a new level of geopolitical rivalry not only for regional security, but also a new dimension to the geopolitical rivalry of global powers.
