Chinese President Xi Jinping also described the visit as “historic and groundbreaking”, saying the two countries agreed to build a new foundation to take the mutual relations to a more strategic and stable level.
According to analysts, relations between Washington and Beijing have been under intense pressure over trade disputes, Taiwan questions, technology competition and Middle East issues.
