  • Bangladesh has signed an important memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United States to strengthen Bangladesh’s energy security and expand the path to alternative energy sources.

The agreement was signed by representatives of the two countries at an official event at the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington on Thursday.

Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, Dr. Khalilur Rahman and Energy Minister Chris Wright signed the MoU on behalf of the United States. The Bangladesh Embassy in Washington said the agreement opened up new areas of strategic energy cooperation between the two countries.

This initiative is seen as significant in the context of energy supply and price volatility in the global market. Bangladesh is attaching great importance to this cooperation as a strategic step to ensure long-term energy security, especially due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Under the MoU, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will create technical cooperation, research, skill development and knowledge exchange between the two countries in the oil, natural gas, LNG, LPG, geosmalic energy and biopower sectors. It is also expected to play a supporting role in ensuring the stability of the energy import and supply chains at affordable prices.

According to the Bangladesh Embassy, the agreement will play an important role not only in supplying energy, but also in the diversification of energy sources and the formation of sustainable infrastructure. This could increase joint investment and technological partnership between the two countries in the renewable energy sector in the future.

On the occasion, Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman said the agreement is a new milestone in the relations between Bangladesh and the United States. He thanked Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and US President Donald Trump for their support in expanding cooperation in the energy sector.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright described the agreement as “historic progress” in relations between the two countries. He said this partnership will play a positive role in stability and development in South Asia through energy security, technology and investment cooperation.

According to analysts, the agreement with the United States will strengthen the multifaceted energy strategy that Bangladesh is moving towards amid rising energy demand and the uncertainty of the global market.
