Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has proposed to hold the International Anti-Corruption Conference in Bangladesh in 2028.
TIB executive director Iftekharuzzaman said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has responded positively to the matter.
A meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat on Thursday in detail the anti-corruption, good governance and institutional reforms. Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani was also present at the meeting.
The prime minister’s additional press secretary Atiqur Rahman Ruman said the meeting reaffirmed the government’s strong stance against corruption and discussed the necessary steps to strengthen good governance.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, Iftekharuzzaman said, “We have made some specific recommendations to the prime minister on good governance and anti-corruption activities. He took the matter very positively and assured that necessary steps would be taken to implement it.”
He said the meeting also discussed the importance of reforming and reconstruction of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The TIB believes that structural reforms are needed to allow anti-corruption institutions to work more effectively and independently.
Iftekharuzzaman said, “The present government wants to send a message to the international community that they are uncompromising against corruption. In that continuation, the International Anti-Corruption Conference of 2028 has been proposed to be held in Bangladesh.”
The conference is held every two years and has previously been held in Malaysia, Thailand and South Korea in Asia. This year’s conference will be held in the Dominican Republic.
According to the TIB chief, the prime minister has agreed to the proposal in principle and the government will take formal action in this regard after the approval of the cabinet.
