Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has started sending automatic notices for traffic law violations in Dhaka city.
This notice is being issued through the e-traffic prosecution system based on videos and still images captured by CCTV cameras.
This information was given in a public notice signed by DMP Acting Commissioner Md. Sarwar on Sunday (May 3).
The notification said that this initiative has been taken with the aim of modernizing the city’s traffic management, reducing traffic congestion and improving citizen services. Action is being taken against vehicle owners and drivers involved in various crimes including unregistered and unfit vehicles, illegal parking, driving on the wrong side of the road, and disobeying signals by collecting evidence through CCTV cameras.
An automatic notice is being sent to the address of the concerned owner or driver through the e-traffic prosecution software by registered post. After receiving the notice, the case must be settled by appearing at the DMP headquarters or the concerned traffic department within the stipulated time and paying the fine prescribed under the Road Transport Act.
The DMP said that if the person fails to appear within the stipulated time, the next step will be to issue a summons or arrest warrant. In this case, legal action will be taken through the Special Metropolitan Magistrate.
The DMP further warned that if any person or gang demands money in the name of a CCTV camera-based case, it will be considered fraud. In such a situation, it has been urged to contact the nearest police station or the concerned traffic department.
It is worth noting that recently, advanced CCTV cameras with artificial intelligence (AI) technology have been installed on various important roads and signal points in the capital. Through these cameras, digital case processing has been started for various traffic offenses including red light violation, crossing the stop line, illegal parking, and left lane blocking.
