The Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Advisor Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman said that if the Rooppur nuclear power plant is fully operational, it will be possible to meet about ten percent of the country’s total electricity needs. As a result, about two crore people will benefit directly from this.
He came up with the information at a briefing at the Press Information Department (PID) conference room at the Secretariat on Tuesday. Information and Broadcasting Ministry Secretary Mahbuba Farzana was present on the occasion.
The first unit of the Rooppur project is planned to add 300 MW of electricity to the national grid in August this year. It will be an important addition to the country’s energy security and power supply system.
Regarding the energy situation, he said there is currently no oil crisis in the country. According to the government, about one lakh metric tons of diesel are in stock and another 1 lakh to 80 thousand metric tons of diesel will reach the country by April 30. He hoped that the supply chain would continue to be stable.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) last month approved fourteen projects worth Rs 13 thousand ₹445 crore. This includes both new projects and revised projects, which will contribute to the development of power generation, road connectivity and local administration.
He said that through these projects, development and welfare activities are being carried out continuously. Besides, the government fares of Dhaka’s buses and minibuses have remained unchanged even though the cost of transport in some cases due to the fuel price has increased.
According to experts, if the Rooppur power plant is to produce it, it will play a big role in diversifying the country’s energy sources and can make a significant contribution to the long-term power shortage.
