Tanker targeted in Hormuz Strait, tensions rise again

International Desk »

  • The shooting of an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, the important Middle East route, has raised new concerns.

The UKMTO, the UK’s maritime safety monitoring agency, said it had received information about an attack on a tanker and was monitoring the situation around the incident.

According to the agency’s preliminary report, the incident took place about 20 nautical miles northeast of the coast of Oman. The tanker’s captain said the shooting was fired from the gunboat without any prior warning, which is contrary to the international maritime security protocol.

The report also noted that two gunboats used in the attack were believed to be under the control of the IRGC.
