No agreement with Iran, Vance returns to US after talks

  • US Vice President JD Vance said that no agreement could be reached in 21 hours of long diplomatic talks with Iran . As a result, the US delegation is leaving Pakistan and returning home without any agreement.

“Unfortunately, we were unable to reach an agreement,” Vance said at a press conference in Islamabad on Sunday. “This is a bigger loss for Iran than for the United States.” He stressed that the United States had clearly outlined its “inviolable conditions,” or red lines, but Tehran had not accepted them.

According to Vance, the main sticking point in the talks was Iran’s nuclear program. The United States wanted Iran to formally commit not to developing nuclear weapons. But Iran did not agree to this condition or other proposals.

He also said that he was in contact with US President Donald Trump multiple times throughout the negotiations , which indicates the seriousness of the situation.

The meeting was the first direct high-level dialogue between the United States and Iran in more than a decade and is considered one of the most important diplomatic initiatives since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The outcome of the talks largely depended on the fragile two-week ceasefire and the normalization of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz .

About 20 percent of the world’s energy supply passes through the waterway, and recent conflicts have led to instability in international oil prices as Iran’s control over the route has strengthened.

Meanwhile, the Iranian government has said that although the formal talks have ended, the dialogue has not completely stopped. The exchange of documents at the technical level will continue and there is a possibility of continuing the talks in the future despite the differences of opinion.

Pakistan’s role as a mediator has gained special importance in the international arena. The meeting, held in Islamabad, was surrounded by unprecedented security measures, highlighting the importance and sensitivity of the dialogue.

Analysts say that while there may not be immediate progress, the talks have laid the foundation for future diplomatic efforts. However, a lasting solution remains uncertain unless the trust deficit on the nuclear issue is overcome.
