The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Tuesday arrested former speaker of parliament Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury from a house in the capital’s Dhanmondi.
DB chief Shafiqul Islam confirmed the arrest to the media in the morning and said he was taken to the DB office. There was no immediate information on the exact case where he was arrested.
According to the documents of the National Assembly, Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury took over as the Speaker on April 30, 2013 and was in office for three consecutive terms. He resigned on September 2nd in the wake of political change following a student coup on August 5 last year.
After the fall of the government, several cases were filed against former Awami League ministers, MPs and leaders in different parts of the country. In the meantime, he was accused in a case filed in connection with the murder of Sonarkar Muslim Uddin during the Rangpur movement.
The law enforcement agencies have said that further steps will be taken in the interest of the progress and investigation of the relevant cases. There is no official explanation for the exact reason for the arrest.
