US President Donald Trump said Iran was interested in talks despite the ongoing tensions. But he said Tehran was not yet ready to take the steps necessary to reach an agreement. At the same time, he described Iran as a “tough adversary.”
Trump made the comments while speaking to reporters on Air Force One en route from Florida to Washington on Sunday local time. In response to various questions about Iran, he said he believed Tehran was trying to resolve the situation through talks.
In Trump’s words, “They want to talk, there’s no doubt about it. But they’re not ready yet to do what’s necessary to reach an agreement. I believe they will get to that point eventually.”
He also claimed that the United States had recently attacked some of Iran’s drone production facilities. At the same time, he also commented that Iran’s missile capabilities had significantly decreased. According to him, “Iran’s military capabilities have been greatly weakened. Their capabilities in the production of missiles and drones have also decreased.”
The US president warned that if necessary, Iran’s main oil export hub, Kharg Island, could also be attacked.
In his opinion, countries that depend on Gulf oil should come forward to protect this waterway. He said, “Many countries collect energy from here. So they need to come forward in their own interests. The United States may not need a permanent presence there, because we produce a lot of oil ourselves.”
Meanwhile, in a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump criticized some US media outlets for reporting on the Iran war. He accused these media outlets of spreading “misinformation” and called for strict action against them.
