Renowned physicist and educationist Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Dhaka University. He was previously serving as the Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University.
Education Minister Dr. ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon announced his name at a press conference held at the Ministry of Education meeting room on Monday.
The path of education and research
Dr. Obaidul Islam was born in Morelganj, Bagerhat district. He graduated from the Department of Physics, Dhaka University in 1987 and obtained his master’s degree in 1988. Later, he obtained his PhD degree from Toyama University, Japan in 1999.
He started teaching in the Physics Department of Dhaka University in 1994 and was later promoted to the rank of Professor. During his long academic career at the university, he played an active role in research and academic activities.
He has published several research articles in various national and international journals. He has also written a chapter in a research book.
Administrative and organizational responsibilities
In addition to his academic career, Dr. Obaidul Islam has also served in various important positions in the university administration and teachers’ organizations. He was a member of the Senate of Dhaka University.
Apart from this, he also served as the Secretary General of the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers’ Associations, General Secretary of the Dhaka University Teachers’ Association, and President of the University Teachers’ Association of Bangladesh (UTAB), an organization of university teachers.
New responsibilities as Vice-Chancellor
On September 12, 2024, he was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University and officially assumed office on September 15.
When the then Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, Niaz Ahmed Khan, resigned in early 2026, Dr. Obaidul Islam was appointed as the 31st Vice-Chancellor of the university.
Based on his extensive academic and administrative experience, he is going to start his new responsibilities at the helm of the country’s oldest university.
