Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been named as an accused for the first time in an explosive case related to the brutal murders that took place in Peelkhana on February 25, 2009 .
The chief prosecutor in the case said that this decision is being taken because his name came up in the statements of prosecution witnesses during the long judicial process.
According to the prosecution, evidence has been found in the testimony of Sheikh Hasina and some other ministers and Awami League leaders. Therefore, preparations are being made to formally charge them in a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act. The case currently has a list of about 850 accused and 1200 witnesses; of which, 300 have testified.
57 army officers were killed in the BDR mutiny. The trial court sentenced 152 people to death in the case in 2013. Later, the High Court upheld the death sentences of 139 people, sentenced 185 to life imprisonment, and sentenced many others to varying terms. However, the explosive case is still pending and is at the stage of taking evidence.
