Four independent candidates have announced their withdrawal from the Dhaka-17 parliamentary constituency, supporting BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman. The decision was announced on Wednesday evening.
The candidates who withdrew from the election are former MP and Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF) President SM Abul Kalam Azad, DAB symbol candidate Shamim Ahmed, pineapple symbol candidate Md. Rashedul Haque, and apple symbol candidate Manjur Humayun.
Veteran freedom fighter Abdus Salam, advisor to the BNP chairman and chief coordinator of Tarique Rahman’s election management committee for Dhaka-17 constituency, said that after discussions, the four candidates decided to withdraw their candidacies in support of Tarique Rahman.
Meanwhile, SM Abul Kalam Azad and Shamim Ahmed announced their decision publicly. The other two candidates confirmed their withdrawal from the election by expressing their support over the telephone.
