The Election Commission has decided to withdraw the Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) and the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the police station following clashes and the death of a person over an election program in Jhenaigati, Sherpur.
Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed informed the media about this on Thursday (January 29) afternoon.
Earlier, the party demanded the withdrawal of the Assistant Returning Officer and OC within 24 hours over the murder of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Rezaul Karim. More than a hundred people were injured in a clash between BNP and Jamaat supporters over the placement of chairs during an election manifesto reading ceremony in Jhenaigati on Wednesday. Rezaul Karim, who was seriously injured, died on the way to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
Various political parties have demanded a speedy investigation and trial, calling the incident a violation of the impartial environment of the election. BNP said the clash could have been avoided and a fair investigation is necessary to determine responsibility for the entire incident.
