China has expressed deep concern over a possible US military strike on Iran. Beijing’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Kong, warned that the crisis cannot be resolved through force and that any military adventure would push the Middle East into extreme uncertainty.
Speaking at an open debate at the UN Security Council, he said that Iran is an independent and sovereign state and its internal affairs should be determined by its people. China reiterated its support for Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.
Fu Kong called on all parties concerned, including the United States, to abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, saying it is essential to refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of other countries and from using or threatening to use force.
He also said that the Middle East is not an area of great power competition. China is ready to jointly play a constructive role with the international community to safeguard regional peace and stability.
