The transportation sector is in dire straits due to the ongoing LPG autogas crisis across the country. Due to the lack of gas supply, nearly 1,000 autogas stations in 64 districts of the country are on the verge of being shut down, causing severe suffering to owners and drivers of LPG-powered vehicles.
At a press conference organized at Reporters Unity in Dhaka, the Bangladesh LPG Autogas Station and Conversion Workshop Owners Association said that although about 150,000 vehicles in the country have been converted to LPG with the encouragement of the government, traffic movement is currently disrupted due to the lack of gas due to the acute crisis. This is severely affecting passenger services and harassing the common people.
The organization’s president, Sirajul Mawla, said that although the country consumes an average of 140,000 tons of LPG per month, the transportation sector only needs 15,000 tons. The entire autogas sector is facing collapse due to the lack of supply of this small amount.
At the press conference, a strong demand was made to the government to ensure the supply of LPG according to demand, quickly resolve the import bottleneck, and take initiatives to import from alternative sources to avoid future crises.
