The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) has expressed deep shock and condolences over the death of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. The organization’s Secretary General Md. Golam Sarwar said in a condolence message that Bangladesh has lost an uncompromising and pro-democracy leader who left a lasting mark on the country’s modern political history.
The condolence message highlighted Khaleda Zia’s contributions to the restoration of democracy, economic liberalization, development of the export-oriented ready-made garment industry, women’s empowerment and education, especially for girls, during her three-term prime ministership. It was also noted that under her leadership, Bangladesh’s economic progress was termed by the World Bank as ‘Asia’s next tiger economy’.
In addition, his wisdom and foresight in strengthening regional cooperation as the Chairperson of SAARC during the terms of 1993-95 and 2005-07 were praised. At the same time, the contribution of martyred President Ziaur Rahman in the establishment of SAARC was also remembered with respect.
The condolence message prayed for the eternal peace of Begum Khaleda Zia and expressed deep condolences to her family, BNP and the people of Bangladesh.
