Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chairman and Chief Advisor of the National Cyber Security Council, has directed to give utmost importance to the country’s cyber security system in view of the upcoming parliamentary elections and possible referendum.
Speaking at a council meeting at the state guest house Jamuna on Sunday, he said it is important to increase IT capacity around the elections and strictly curb rumors, misinformation and cybercrime. Ensuring the security of these systems is also a priority for the government as a large part of citizen services are moving to online platforms.
The Chief Advisor directed the cyber security related organizations to regularly update software and hardware and increase manpower skills. At the same time, he also talked about a rating system for assessing cyber security. He also emphasized that those involved in cyber crimes in the financial sector should not be given any concessions.
Faiz Ahmed Tayyab, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor, said in the meeting that 35 institutions have already been identified as ‘critical information infrastructure’ and there is a need to expand the list further. The coordination of the National Cyber Security Agency and BTRC to combat cybercrime surrounding the elections was also emphasized.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H. Mansur said that several initiatives have been taken to strengthen cyber security in the banking sector. The activities and future plans of the National Cyber Security Agency were also presented at the meeting.
It is worth noting that this 25-member council, formed under the Cyber Security Ordinance 2025, is headed by Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus.
