A fire broke out in a commercial building at Gulistan Zero Point in the capital. The fire broke out in a godown on the roof of the eighth floor of the building at 5:28 pm on Friday (December 26).
The fire service said the first unit reached the scene within five minutes of receiving the information. Currently, six units of Siddiqbazar Fire Station are working to control the fire.
There was a risk of the fire spreading quickly due to the warehouse on the upper floor. Thick black smoke covered the area around Gulistan and Zero Point. In panic, traders and customers from the shops on the ground floor quickly left the building.
The fire service control room said that although there was some difficulty in collecting water initially due to the densely populated area and the crowd of people on the streets, maximum efforts are being made to extinguish the fire. The fire was not completely under control until 5:45 pm. However, no casualties have been reported so far.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage could not be immediately confirmed. People are being evacuated from nearby buildings for safety reasons.
