Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a mass rally in the capital on January 3 to demand the arrest and trial of the killers of Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi, one of the heroes of the July Revolution, and the recovery of illegal weapons across the country.
The party’s assistant secretary general and head of the central media department, Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair, confirmed the matter on Wednesday. He said that the program was decided in a recent meeting of the central executive council and leaders of Dhaka Metropolitan North and South branches held a coordination meeting to make the event successful.
Jamaat has said that Manik Mia Avenue is their first choice for the rally. If permission is not granted there, the rally will be held at Suhrawardy Udyan.
Explaining the goal of the program, the party’s assistant secretary Dr. Hamidur Rahman Azad said, “It is important to restore law and order through exemplary trials of the killers and recovery of illegal weapons. If these demands are not met, it is not possible to ensure equal opportunities for the elections.”
Another assistant secretary, ATM Masum, said that public concerns are growing about the current law and order situation and the safety of candidates. It is in this context that Jamaat is going on a demand program on the streets to ensure a fair election environment.
